Uptown Hamel, Medina

Uptown Hamel is the Historic Downtown District of the City of Medina. This downtown, located off of Highway 55 in the northeastern section of the city; provides an attractive, pedestrian-friendly, mixed-use town center that blends retail, office, specialty shops, residential, and gathering places into a unique community that exudes the history of Medina's birthplace.

Hamel Road Construction
Final Project Update - 11.5.2009

The project is complete!  We want to thank everyone again for their patience and support throughout the project.  The contractor has completed the restoration work and pavement striping.  They have also installed bike racks, benches, trash receptacles, and railings.

Project Warranty

A project warranty inspection will take place in the spring of 2010.  If there are any concerns please contact a project representative.  We are currently aware of some minor paver settlement and this will be corrected next spring.

Snow Removal and Pavers

Please be aware that the businesses and homeowners are responsible for snow removal from the sidewalks in front of their property.  The new pavers are very durable and come with the same snow removal precautions as concrete pavement.  The recommended snow removal methods are:

·        Powered brooms are the best snow removal method for pavers.  Other good methods are snow blowers and hand shovels.

·        If snow removal is hired out, please request that rubber or plastic cutting edges be used on snow plows.

·        The use of a skid steer or skid loader is not recommended due to the tire markings left behind.

·        De-icing agents that are magnesium chloride based are strongly recommended over the typical sodium chloride (salt) based and will help greatly extend the paver lifespan.

As development and density grow in the Uptown Hamel area, the City recognizes that we will increase our services to remove snow from the streets.

Trees and Planter Areas

The plants utilized in the planter areas are low maintenance perennials.  The City asks that the property owners and businesses continue to water and maintain the planting beds in the future.  Here are some tips:

·        Remove seasonal dead plant material as necessary to keep the bed in good repair.

·        Water the beds frequently in the spring to help leach the soil of winter salts.

·        Water throughout the growing season on an as-needed basis.

·        The City will assist in delivering mulch to the beds in the fall to ensure proper root protection for the winter.

Trash Receptacles

The City is responsible for emptying the trash receptacles recently placed in Uptown Hamel.  Over the next several months, the City will empty the receptacles on an as-needed basis.  During the summer months, the receptacles are planned to be emptied on a weekly basis, generally on Mondays.

Utility Boxes/Pedestals

This past summer, the City provided some plantings to screen the visibility of the utility boxes on the corner of Sioux Drive and Hamel Road.  The City will continue to explore other options for screening or removing the boxes as more development (and generation of Tax Increment Financing revenue to fund any modifications) in the area occurs.
