New Resident Guide

If you are new to Medina, the City of Medina would like to welcome you to the community. Click here for the attached New Resident Guide with information to acquaint yourself with your new community. Please stop by City Hall to collect additional information about the community including a city map, recycle calendar and a welcome bag from our local chamber of commerce.

Cable Television

Much of Medina has Cable TV service. In Medina, Cable TV is provided by Mediacom, (800) 332-0245. As an alternative or if you are not in the service area, you can use one of the many satellite providers.

Electricity

Two different electrical companies serve Medina—Xcel Energy (formerly NSP) and Wright-Hennepin. Check the map for your electrical provider.

Garbage & Recycling

Medina licenses one garbage hauler to service the City, Randy's Environmental Services. Although the license controls rates and certain aspects of service, items such as billing, requests and rates for removal of appliances and other large items, complaints, etc. are handled directly with your hauler. Recycling is also provided by Randy's Environmental Services. See the Recycling page for more details.

Internet

High speed internet service is mainly provided by two companies: Mediacom, (800) 332-0245 or Qwest  (800) 244-1111. Certain areas of the city currently do not have access to high speed internet. While the City has decided not to become a provider of telecommunication services, we are interested in assisting residents with cooperative approaches or opportunities to obtain better service in the community. A High Speed Internet Listserv has been created by the City to facilitate information or discussion. If you desire to be added to the Listserv, please e-mail chad.adams@ci.medina.mn.us

Natural Gas

CenterPoint Energy provides most of Medina with natural gas. There are parts of the City, however, that do not have any service. Please contact CenterPoint Energy for more information at (612) 372-4720.

Sewer/Septic

There are a few areas in Medina that offer residential sewer service. The Independence Beach, Medina Morningside, Foxberry Farms, and Hamel areas have city sewer. The remainder of the City relies on septic systems. If you have any questions regarding your sewer bill, please call Teri Portinen, Accounting Technician, at (763) 473-8849.

Storm Water Utility

The purpose for creating the Storm Water Utility is to provide an alternative source of funding from general property taxes to support storm water mandates and needs. See the Storm Water Utility page for more details or call the Accounting Technician at (763) 473-4643.

Telephone

Since January 2001, Medina is wholly in the 763 area code. Be advised that communities directly to the south use the 952 area code while the prefixes are similar between the cities. These cities include Orono, Long Lake, and Wayzata. Communities to the west, north, and east are 763. These communities include Plymouth, Corcoran, Independence, and Maple Plain.

Medina has two different telephone companies. The western portion of the City prefixed with 479 (the Independence Beach area), uses Citizens Communications. Qwest (formerly US West) services the rest of the City. Cellular service is available throughout the City by many different companies.

Frontier (800) 921-8101
Qwest (800) 244-1111

Transportation

Although the City of Medina does not have any regular public transportation routes such as buses, there is one transportation option through West Hennepin Dial-A-Ride.

West Hennepin Dial-A-Ride Transit Service
Dial 763-235-2200

The Dial-A-Ride program is an advance reservation, shared-ride, curb-to-curb bus service that now services the City of Medina.  Anyone can use it and it is only $2 cash per person per one way ride, but appointments need to be made one day in advance. Rides are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dial 763-235-2200  for more information or to schedule a ride. The service area is limited to the boundaries of Greenfield, Long Lake, Loretto, Maple Plain, Medina, Minnetrista, Orono, St. Bonifacious, Wayzata, and the Hennepin County section of Delano.

Voter Registration

Registering to vote in Minnesota is easy! You can stop by City Hall an fill out a registration card, register while getting a new drivers license with your Medina address, or at the polling place on Election Day (see election page for more details). The Secretary of State's office has additional information as does Hennepin County Voter Services. If you have any questions, please call Deputy Clerk Jodi Gallup at 763.473.8850.

Water

Some parts of the city are covered by city water. These areas include Hamel, Cherry Hill, Foxberry Farms, Medina Morningside, Independence Beach, Bridgewater, Wild Meadows, and along much of Highway 55. Other parts of Medina rely on private wells. If you have a well, it is your responsibility to maintain it. If there are any problems with your well, contact a well maintenance company. If you have any billing questions about City water service, please call Teri Portinen, Accounting Technician, at (763) 473-8849.

Direct Utility Billing Payment Authorization

The City often receives comments about rusty water. Culligan water provided the City with a recipe to get the rust out. How to take rust out of clothing from Culligan Soft Water Company:

  • Purchase 6 ounces of oxalic acid (available at a local drug store, ALWAYS USE RUBBER GLOVES and KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN AND ANIMALS).  Use double tubs.  In one tub, fill with 8 gallons of water.  Add 4 tablespoons of oxalic acid.  In the other tub, fill with 8 gallons of water and add 4 to 5 tablespoons of baking soda.  Put the clothes into the acid solution for 2 minutes.  Wring out by hand (USE GLOVES).  Then, put the clothes into the tub with the baking soda solution for 2 to 3 minutes and wring out by hand.  Finally, rinse with fresh water.

Consumer Confidence Report

The City’s 2009 Consumer Confidence Report is based on the many water samples that are drawn from the water system by the Minnesota Department of Health. We strive to provide as good of quality of water as possible. We rely on the residents to notify us of any irregularities in the delivery of the water. Do not hesitate to call us with any questions you may have. Medina operates three separate water systems, each with their own set of challenges. Medina is also supplied by Orono for the Keller Estates Addition and Maple Plain supplies the far southwest corner of the City.
