Medina Police Reserve Unit
Are you interested in giving back to your community? The
Medina Police Reserve Unit is looking for additional reserve
officers. The reserves are non-sworn volunteers who provide
valuable assistance to the police department in a variety of public
safety situations.
The reserves can be found at community events,
riding along with a sworn officer, patrolling neighborhoods and city
parks, directing traffic, or making transports. Reserve officers go
through a rigorous training and receive regular training. Reserves
are trained as First Responders and the proper use of force. The
position can be for anyone interested or studying to go into a law
enforcement career or for anyone interested in helping the
community. You must be at least 19 years old, have a high school
diploma or GED, a valid driver’s license, and pass a criminal
background investigation. Uniforms and equipment are provided by
the department.
Currently (October 2010), the Medina Police Reserve
Unit consists of five full-time (144 or more hours annually)
officers. The Reserve Unit logged 1,204 hours of service in 2009
and 1,343 hours of service in 2008. To support these activities,
over 94 hours of training were provided in 2009. Between 2001 and
2009, Reserves have donated over 16,000 hours of service to the
Medina Police Department and the community, including over 1100
house checks, 265 jail transports, 250 vehicle impounds, and 230
community events (listed below).
According to an independent
organization, the Reserve contribution to the Department was valued
at $24,550 for 2009.
Reserves were instrumental during many weekend night shifts where
licensed officers were spread thin to respond to several events at
one time. One snowy winter evening in 2009, officers had nine cars
in the ditch from 7:00 pm to midnight where the Reserve Unit was
able to provide assistance to the stranded motorists.
Traffic and
DUI saturations were also situations where Reserves played an
important supportive role to licensed officers. In 2009, the Reserve
Units responded to an apartment fire in Plymouth and the Orono/Minnetrista
tornado providing traffic control and scene security. Additionally,
the Reserve Unit represented the Police Department in the funerals
of Long Lake Fireman Brown and Ramsey County Reserve Officer Wilken.
